The financial wellbeing of disabled people

In this study, we spoke to disabled people in the UK to find out what ‘financial wellbeing’ means to them and the difficulties they face in trying to improve their financial wellbeing. We used the information to help us measure the financial wellbeing of disabled people in a survey. The 815 disabled people who took part in the survey were members of a UK wide research panel of approximately 3,500 people run by the Research Institute for Disabled Consumers (RiDC), which is broadly representative of the wider disabled population.

Reforming adult social care: House of Lords committee report

Government plans for adult social care have undergone several changes in the last decade. In December 2022, the House of Lords Adult Social Care Committee published a report examining the adult social care system and making recommendations to make it a “progressive, visible, fairer and kinder system”. In July 2023, the government published a response. It pointed to commitments in its April 2023 white paper, including reform of the adult social care workforce, housing for people who required care and tackling delayed discharge and unnecessary admissions to hospitals.

Warm Home Prescription recommended by 93% of health professionals in latest trial

Following the success of the 28-home 2021/22 Warm Home Prescription (WHP) pilot in Gloucestershire, Energy Systems Catapult, in partnership with local NHS partners and local energy advice organisations, undertook the largest trial of its kind in 2022/23, supporting 823 vulnerable and low-income individuals in Aberdeen, Middlesbrough, Gloucestershire and London.

Living in a cold home can raise the risk of a number of health conditions, with an estimated 10,000 people dying each year across the UK as a result. Warm Home Prescription, invented by Energy Systems Catapult, works to find vulnerable people with health conditions made worse by the cold and gives them immediate, effective support to keep their home at a healthy, warm temperature.

The health and care policy landscape is constantly evolving and the language that we use to describe this landscape changes along with it.

This jargon buster aims to demystify and clarify some of the concepts and terms that are frequently used in health and care policy.

Benefit cap: number of households capped to May 2023

The benefit cap was introduced in April 2013. It was initially applied to HB and subsequently to UC, as UC was gradually rolled out. UC replaces 6 means-tested benefits including HB and since December 2018, UC has been available across Great Britain (GB) to people applying for means-tested social security support. However, a small number of the population may still apply for HB. Read about who can get HB. DWP is in the process of moving all legacy benefit claimants to Universal Credit.
